Builders in Stroud
Building on Stroud’s hills and valleys.
Extensions, renovations and new homes across Stroud and the Five Valleys, from stone cottages in Painswick to family houses in Rodborough and Stonehouse. Two of our recent projects, Chapel House and Stone Barn, are in the Stroud area.

Stone, slopes and views
What makes building around Stroud different.
Stroud sits where five steep valleys meet, and many homes here are built into the hillside. That brings great views and some practical challenges: tight lanes for deliveries, retaining walls, drainage on a slope and gardens on several levels.
The houses are just as varied. Weavers’ cottages and mill owners’ houses from the cloth-making years sit alongside Victorian terraces and newer family homes, most of them in Cotswold stone or render. Just over half of Stroud District lies in the Cotswolds National Landscape, so matching stone, roofs and detailing is part of almost every job.

Our Stroud extension
Chapel House
A single-storey rear extension to a characterful stone house, built in traditional stone under a copper sheet roof. Inside is an open-plan kitchen and dining room with a separate utility. Full-width bi-fold doors open onto a new terrace, which we built with natural stone retaining walls to handle the slope of the garden.
- Stone extension, copper roof
- Open-plan kitchen-diner
- Separate utility room
- Underfloor heating
- Limestone floor tiles
- Indian sandstone terrace

What we do in Stroud
Services for Stroud homes and businesses.
Home extensions in Stroud
Single-storey kitchen extensions, garden rooms and two-storey additions, designed for sloping plots and finished in stone or render to match the house.
Home renovations in Stroud
Refurbishing cottages, terraces and mill-era houses, from rewiring and new heating to reworking small rooms into a layout that suits family life.
Bespoke new homes in Stroud
One-off houses on hillside and infill plots. As new build contractor we plan the groundworks, retaining walls and access before the design is fixed, so the slope works for the house.
Terraces and landscaping
Level terraces, stone retaining walls, paths and steps that turn a steep garden into somewhere you can use.
Kitchens and bathrooms
Designed and installed by Decoris, our sister company, from a cottage kitchen to a run of guest en-suites.
Holiday lets and venues
Interiors for holiday accommodation and event spaces, as at Stone Barn and Welches Farm, planned around guests as well as owners.

Interiors near Stroud
Stone Barn and Welches Farm
Two buildings on one estate, transformed into a luxury holiday let and a wedding venue. We remodelled the bedrooms, added new en-suites and a bridal suite with a freestanding bath, built a children’s playroom with bunk beds, and made handcrafted banqueting tables for the celebrations.

Planning in Stroud
The local rules we plan around.
Stroud District Council decides planning across the town and the surrounding valleys. As part of our design service, we prepare and manage the applications.
Our design service →- 41 conservation areas. They include Stroud Town Centre, Stroud Top of the Town, Painswick, Minchinhampton and Nailsworth, each with its own appraisal of what makes it special.
- The Industrial Heritage Conservation Area. First designated in 1987 and extended since, it follows the mills and their surroundings along the valleys. If your home is a mill conversion or sits near one, it’s likely to be inside it.
- The Cotswolds National Landscape. Covering just over half the district, it tightens permitted development, so side extensions and cladding need planning permission.
- Listed buildings. Many older cottages and houses are listed, which needs listed building consent for changes inside as well as out.
- Sloping sites. Retaining walls, changes in ground level and drainage often need extra drawings or engineering, so we look at them at the first visit.
Painswick and the valleys
Around Stroud
Painswick, often called the Queen of the Cotswolds, has its own conservation area covering the pale limestone houses and narrow lanes around the church. We build extensions and renovate homes there with the same care as in the town. Not on the list? Just ask.

FAQs
Building in Stroud
Can you build an extension on a steep site?
Yes. At Chapel House we built the extension and a new terrace with natural stone retaining walls to deal with the slope. On a steep plot we check access, ground levels and drainage before design, because they affect both the plans and the price.
Will the new stonework match my house?
We source stone to match as closely as possible and copy the coursing, joints and details of the original. Where the house is rendered, we match the render and colour instead.
My house is in the Industrial Heritage Conservation Area. Can I still extend it?
Usually, yes, but the design needs to respect the character of the mills and the buildings around them, and some work that’s normally permitted development needs planning permission. We review the council’s appraisal for your area before we draw anything.
Do you work in Painswick?
Yes. We work in Painswick and across the valleys, including Minchinhampton, Nailsworth, Stonehouse, Rodborough, Amberley, Chalford and Bisley.
Can you fit out a holiday let or event space?
Yes. At Stone Barn and Welches Farm we created a holiday let and a wedding venue, including en-suites, a bridal suite and handmade banqueting tables. Decoris handles the interior design and fit-out.
Which council will decide my planning application?
Stroud District Council for Stroud and the surrounding valleys. We confirm whether your home is in a conservation area or the National Landscape and manage the application from start to finish.
